Freelancer pay: profit is different from salary

If you are a sole trader, start with turnover and allowable expenses to work out profit. Putting turnover into an employee salary calculator would use the wrong NI rules.

Calculate self-employed tax

Check how you are paid

Sole traders, employees, umbrella workers and limited-company contractors are taxed differently. A day rate alone does not tell you your tax status or take-home pay.

Choose the right calculation

The Self Assessment tool estimates tax and Class 4 NI on simple sole-trader profit. The contractor tool has separate PAYE and limited-company examples. Neither decides your IR35 status.

Plan for when bills fall due

Tax bills, payments on account, VAT and uneven income can all affect the cash you have available. These annual estimates do not complete a tax return or set out your payment dates.
